BARCELONA 1-1 TOTTENHAM

Fernando Llorente: "Given the chance, I'd go back to Athletic"

The Tottenham striker's contract is up in June: "Spurs have an option of a one-year extension but right now, I don’t know what will happen. If they want me to stay on, I will".

Fernando Llorente says he could not feel much happier to see Spurs advance in the Champions League when all seemed lost. Pochettino's team snatched a draw against Barcelona last night to end the group stage level on points with Inter Milan but go though on goal difference.  “It all turned out perfectly for us in the end, we’re all very happy because it looked almost impossible for us, for who we started the group stage, and that we would be going out, but look what happened. We always had faith in ourselves and we managed to turn it around – and it’s not easy to get a result at Camp Nou. We thought Inter would win their match but at half-time, we knew that they were losing and that we were in with a chance. Even so, we knew that we had to score at least one goal, because a draw would be enough for us", Llorente said after the game.

Spurs stint coming to an end

It's heartening news for the 33-year-old whose future remains up in the air. Llorente doesn't know where he will be next season as his contract expires at the end of the season. “I don’t know what I’m going to do. Tottenham have the option to offer me a one-year extension but right now, I don’t know what will happen. If they want me to stay on, I will. Right now, nothing’s been said and as it stands, my contract will be up in June. Whatever happens, I’ll give the best I’ve got while I’m with Spurs. My future doesn’t depend entirely on me, I need to sit down with Daniel and talk things through with the club”

The striker says he has been following the fortunes of his old club Athletic and admitted that he would jump at the chance to return to Bilbao. “If I get the opportunity and if Athletic want me, of course I’d go back but they haven’t been in contact with me. Right now, they are holding elections and we’ll see who comes in as president – I just want what’s best for the club. It’s a delicate moment for Athletic but I have a lot of belief in the team – they are a very talented, united squad and I am sure they’ll pull through".
