The Norwegian will oversee the Premier League club through to the end of the 2018/19 campaign.

Following Jose Mourinho's departure from Old Trafford yesterday, the Premier League outfit have confirmed that former United player Ole Gunnar Solskjær will oversee the day-to.day running of the club as caretaker manager through to the end of the current season.

The Red Devils languish 19 points behind leaders Liverpool but are still involved in the Champions League having been drawn against PSG in the Round of 16. The Norwegian's first competitive match is an away trip to Cardiff City on Saturday.

United now begin the search for a full time replacement to substitute the coach from Setubal for the 2019/20 season with Zinedine Zidane and Pochettino being linked with the position at Old Trafford.

The Old Trafford outfit confirmed the news in an official communique:

Manchester United announced today that former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjær has been appointed as caretaker manager until the end of the 2018/19 season.

Solskjær scored 126 goals in 366 appearances for United between 1996 and 2007. In 2008 he became the club’s reserve-team manager, before taking the managerial role at FC Molde in Norway.
Solskjær will take charge of the first team with immediate effect and will remain in place while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new full-time manager. He will be joined by Mike Phelan as first-team coach, working alongside Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna.

January 07, 2007 Manchester United's Ole Gunnar Solskjaer celebrates scoring the winning goal against Aston Villa during their FA Cup third round football match at Old Trafford in Manchester.

“Manchester United is in my heart and it’s brilliant to be coming back in this role. I’m really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club,” said Solskjær.

Ed Woodward, Executive Vice Chairman, comments: “Ole is a club legend with huge experience, both on the pitch and in coaching roles. His history at Manchester United means he lives and breathes the culture here and everyone at the club is delighted to have him and Mike Phelan back. We are confident they will unite the players and the fans as we head into the second half of the season.”
